DOT return-to-duty steps for Tampa workers

Understand where your SAP evaluations fit and what your employer handles before you return to safety-sensitive work.

Start with the SAP evaluation

After a DOT drug or alcohol violation, completing an ordinary drug test or a general counseling visit does not replace the SAP process. The SAP assesses your situation and provides individualized recommendations.

01

Initial evaluation

Discuss your violation, history, and circumstances with the SAP.

02

Written recommendations

Receive individualized education and/or treatment requirements.

03

Complete your requirements

Attend the recommended services and keep completion records.

04

Follow-up evaluation

The SAP reviews documented compliance. This evaluation is included in the $499 package.

05

Return-to-duty testing

Your employer arranges the required test after SAP compliance is established.

06

Follow-up testing

Once back in safety-sensitive work, follow the SAP testing plan administered by your employer.

What to gather before your appointment

  • Your violation or test information, if available.
  • Your employer or designated employer representative’s contact details.
  • The DOT agency that regulates your job.
  • Relevant prior evaluation, education, or treatment records.
  • Your Clearinghouse registration details if you are an FMCSA-regulated driver. Never send your password.

Who orders the return-to-duty test?

Your employer is responsible for arranging required return-to-duty testing after the SAP determines successful compliance. Owner-operators should discuss their employer obligations and arrangements with their consortium/third-party administrator.

Successful SAP compliance does not require an employer to hire or reinstate you. Do not resume safety-sensitive duties until all applicable requirements and employer authorization are satisfied.
